Why do I need an open access license?
Some funders require a specific license to meet their OA policy requirements. This is usually the CC BY license, which allows others to 'distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.' Other licenses offer a noncommercial clause such as CC BY-NC.
What are the different open access license types?
Familiarize yourself with the license types below and check how they match up with your funder's requirements!
- CC0 – CC zero: No rights reserved – public domain: others may freely build upon, enhance and reuse the works for any purposes without restriction under copyright or database law.
- CC BY – Attribution: This license lets others distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.
- CC BY-SA – Attribution Share Alike: This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.
- CC BY-NC – Attribution Non-Commercial: This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially
- CC BY-NC-SA – Attribution Non-Commercial-Share Alike: This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially, under the same license.
- CC BY-ND – Attribution Non-Derivatives: This license lets others reuse the work for any purpose, including commercially; but it cannot be shared with others in adapted form, and credit must be provided to you.
- CC BY-NC-ND – Attribution Non-Commercial-No- Derivs: allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.
